Advocacy

SRN was instrumental in the passage of legislation. The following laws are now in affect in the State of Florida due to SRN’s advocacy:

  1. Students may be certified as a “Homeless Unaccompanied Youth” and have the right to access their birth certificate, social security card and license without parental consent
  2. Unaccompanied Youth have the right to petition the court for removal of disabilities of nonage in an expedited emancipation with no court fees
  3. Unaccompanied Youth, 16 years or older,  may consent for their medical and mental health care or consent to a forensic medical examination without parental consent
  4. Unaccompanied Youth may access food stamps and Medicaid as an independent youth 
  5. Tuition waivers for higher education include living in a dorm, which is not permanent housing
