Advocacy
SRN was instrumental in the passage of legislation. The following laws are now in affect in the State of Florida due to SRN’s advocacy:
- Students may be certified as a “Homeless Unaccompanied Youth” and have the right to access their birth certificate, social security card and license without parental consent
- Unaccompanied Youth have the right to petition the court for removal of disabilities of nonage in an expedited emancipation with no court fees
- Unaccompanied Youth, 16 years or older, may consent for their medical and mental health care or consent to a forensic medical examination without parental consent
- Unaccompanied Youth may access food stamps and Medicaid as an independent youth
- Tuition waivers for higher education include living in a dorm, which is not permanent housing
